Local tourism operators host a special day out for international students

RotoruaNZ is working with Education New Zealand and a number of local tourism businesses to host a farewell function for 10 Brazilian students who are returning home after a three-month stay in the city.

The group from Western Heights High School are among the first international students to come to New Zealand since the borders reopened and a special day out has been arranged for Monday 17 October to celebrate their time in Rotorua.

Operators Velocity Valley, ZORB and Skyline Rotorua are all offering free rides and Education New Zealand and RotoruaNZ are co-hosting a BBQ lunch.

RotoruaNZ international manager Lou Baddiley said, “International students have always been an important part of our visitor economy and over the past two years we’ve missed the cultural vibrancy they bring to the city.

“We also know that students who study here are likely to return again as visitors later in life, so today’s programme will ensure this group heads home with cherished memories of some of the fun activities that Rotorua is so well known for.”

Education New Zealand international market manager Shanna Luafalealo said, “Education New Zealand worked closely with the Government of Paraná to bring the group of students to New Zealand. The more positive their New Zealand experience is, the more likely the programme is to be renewed next year so we’re very grateful to the Rotorua tourism businesses involved in creating such a special day for this group.”

The students are part of a 100-strong group of 14 -16 year olds from Paraná (southern Brazil) who travelled to New Zealand to undertake a three-month study experience. The students represent all regions of the state, which has a population of around 11 million and an economy with a strong emphasis on agribusiness. The immersion allowed them to experience the New Zealand education system, lifestyle, and Māori culture.
